In 1848 Henry Angel, tired of prospecting for gold he might never find, decided to put down roots and open up a trading post. Thus, Angels Camp was founded and Henry Angel found his calling. It didn’t take long for the miners to find a few strikes of gold, and up until recently, they continued to do so. The hills around Angels Camp are now home to a system of tunnels leftover from all that digging.
Mark Twain and Jumping Frogs. What really put Angels Camp on the map was the publication in 1865 of Mark Twain’s beloved short story, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” which he first heard while staying in town. And the Jumping Frog Jubilee, held every May, attracts over 40,000 visitors hoping to cheer on their favorite little green friend in the annual long-jump contest.
